Command An Army Beginner Guide — Gems, Summons & Evolutions

A Command An Army beginner guide: how gems are earned, the evolution chains and the level-20 rule, starter units to pick, formations that hold a point, and whether to attack or defend.

Command An Army is simple to start and easy to waste: you earn gems, summon units, and field an army inside a Star Limit — and the players who grow fastest treat gems as an investment, not a slot machine. This guide walks the full loop from your first round to a developed four-class army, based on recorded gameplay of the current version. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Your First Round: Attacker or Defender?

Every round you pick a side. Both play the same core game — move your army, capture and hold the point — but they play differently:

  • Defending is easier for beginners. The defender holds the capture point with only two real entry routes to cover, and the third approach is a long flank that eats attacker time. Sit your shields on the point, archers behind them, and let the attacker come to you. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Attacking is stronger on open maps. Community consensus from recorded matches: on the Plain Fields map attacking is the better bet, because a failed assault can retreat and re-group while the defender is stuck waiting. Community report · 2026-09-15

You also pick a player class before fighting on foot yourself — the recorded choices are Sword & Shield, Hammer and Assassin. Sword & Shield is the safe default; Assassin is popular but creators openly debate whether it is actually the best. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Before the round starts you choose starter troops — the standard opening is shields in front, spears behind them, archers in the back. That triangle is the formation you will reuse all game. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Earning Gems Fast

Gems are the whole economy — they pay for summons, and summons are the only way to get new units:

  1. Win matches. A loss pays almost nothing; a win pays around 75 gems — so finishing a match matters more than starting five. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  2. Capture points and get kills. Both feed the score that converts into gems at the end of a round; player kills are worth the most. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  3. Finish quests — the quest list (for example: hit 500 enemies with mounted rush attacks) pays a steady gem trickle. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  4. Sell duplicate units back. A spare unit converts into gems — 500 for some 3★s. Your gacha trash is currency. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  5. Redeem codes. The game has an active code system that hands out free gems — check the codes tracker before you grind. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Spending Gems: The Summon Loop

The summon screen is a rotating gacha, and five facts change how you should use it:

  • Banners rotate and each features specific units — the odds shown on screen differ between banners (the same unit has been seen at 0.15% and 0.19%). Check the odds before spending, not after. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • The pity counter is real. A guaranteed 4★ arrives at 400 summons on a banner, and the counter persists across sessions — long-term players should track it instead of chasing single pulls. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Duplicates are not trash. Two copies of the same unit combine into an Ascension (capped at 3); anything past that sells for gems. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Luck potions boost a summon session — save them for a banner you actually want. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Chase evolutions, not just rarity. See the units database for the four evolution chains — a 1★ Archer grows into the best ranged unit in the game. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Which Units to Pick First

Inside a fresh account's Star Limit, cheap units carry every early match:

  • Archer (1★) — weak today, but it evolves: Archer → Longbowman → Flaming Archer (each stage needs unit level 20). One creator measured the full climb at about 20 hours of gameplay and called the Flaming Archer the best unit in the game. Start the grind early. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Shieldman (1★) — cheap front line that holds the point while your archers work; its evolution line ends at the Imperial Guard, the best anti-cavalry unit. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Scout Rider (2★, ~20% pull) — the mobility pick: chase runners, flank archers, assassinate players. Its line ends at the Lancer. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

When your Star Limit grows — it rises every five player levels — the Halberdier (2★) and the 4★ units (Spartan, Samurai, Berserker, Immortal) enter the picture. Skip expensive rare units early: a half-fielded 4★ army loses to a full field of 1★ counters. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Formations That Actually Hold a Point

  • Shields front, spears second, archers back — the default battle order; melee contact happens on the shields while ranged chips down. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Formations are commands, not just decoration — line, triangle, wall and circle formations are orderable in battle. The circle formation stops cavalry charges — do not charge a circle with horses, and form one when enemy horses are hunting you. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Brace your spears. A cavalry charge into braced Spearmen dies; the same charge into unbraced infantry eats them. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Watch your own team's composition. If teammates already fielded two archers, take spears or shields — four of the same class is how points get lost. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15

Small Things Worth Knowing

  • You ride your own horse around the world — and the horse can die permanently for the round, so do not suicide it into a shield wall. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Cavalry can assassinate players: press the assassinate key (B on horseback) to rush the enemy general. Killing the player is worth more than killing their troops. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Rush is a mechanic, not a mood — mounted rush has on-hit damage and a cooldown (rebalanced in the NEW UNITS update). Rush archers and isolated targets; never rush a standing infantry line head-on. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
  • Cannons exist in some engagements — early consensus is that they are underpowered, so do not build your plan around them. Community report · 2026-09-15
  • Losing is expensive. With near-zero gems from a loss, one confident defense pays more than three thrown attacks. Seen in footage · 2026-09-15
